At the grand opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim on 24 February 1961, a momentous occasion unfolded. A new passenger car model, the 220 SEb Coupe, was unveiled, marking the 75th anniversary of the motor car. This elegant and representative model marked a true highlight of the entire car lineup.
From both a technical and stylistic standpoint, the 220 SEb Coupe was derived from the 220 SEb sedan, first presented in August 1959, and was part of the model series 111. Unlike its successor, this car was designed as a full-fledged four-seater with the same chassis and wheelbase as the sedan. While the tailfins, which had made a notable impact at the sedans' debut, were now more subdued on the coupe with its distinctive Mercedes-Benz design language. While the engine and transmission choices were the same as in the sedan, the coupe introduced a key technical advancement: it was the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car to feature disc brakes on the front wheels.
The original Data Card for this 220 SEb Coupe shows that it left Untertürkheim on 16 July 1965, finished in Black (040) with a Cream Leather (209) interior. Powered by the 2.2-liter fuel-injected six-cylinder, it was optioned with a four-speed automatic transmission. The original Fahrzeugbrief shows the car was delivered to Wilhelm Pieper Möbelfabrik of Herford, Germany, on 19 July.
The Fahrzeugbrief shows that the car was removed from road use on 29 July 1984 and placed into storage with a restoration shop. After approximately 35 years in storage, a full restoration was completed between 2019 and 2021, transforming the car into its current presentation. The bodywork was refinished in Beige Metallic (462), while the interior was reupholstered with chocolate brown leather and beige carpeting. The rich burl wood trim beautifully complements the new leather.
Standing as a wonderful representative of the marque, this 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Coupe has previously received a factory replacement engine from Mercedes, as well as a nearly identical transmission from a 230 SL. This well-driving example will surely continue to command attention wherever it goes.
