The Giulia Sprint Speciale, built from the spring of 1963 to the end of 1965, was an areodynamic 2+2 sports car from Alfa Romeo. It was based on the very successful Giulietta and Giulia series and the famous Berlinetta Aerodinamica Technic (BAT) studies by Alfa Romeo and Bertone. The design of the BAT studies was beautifully translated by Bertone's chief designer Franco Scaglione to the Sprint Speciale as an exciting and aerodynamic body for series production. With a drag coefficient of 0.28, it was more aerodynamic than any production car on the market for the next 20 years.
The name Giulia Sprint Speciale alluded to the fact that this car was the “grown-up” version of its predecessor Giulietta, which had a 1300 cc engine. The Giulia was equipped with the more powerful “Veloce” version of the 1600 cc Alfa engine producing 113-horsepower, which helped the sports car, weighing only 2,094 lbs, to achieve very good performance and a top speed of 124 mph. By the end of 1965, only 1,252 hand-built examples of the Giulia Sprint Speciale had been produced.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale shown here was completed on 13 July 1964 and delivered to its first owner Giuseppe Notare in Naples/Italy on 29 October 1965. It is a later example with front disc brakes. The original color combination was white with blue leather. The car was later exported to the US and subsequently sold to Austria in 2006, where it was extensively restored. Completely disassembled and repainted, the work is well documented by numerous photos. After the restoration, the Austrian collector sold the car in 2013 to its next owner Germany.
In 2013, the car was registered in Germany where it was regularly exercised and extensively maintained. After five years, the Alfa then passed to an Alfa Romeo collector from Luxembourg. Since 2018, the car has been dutifully maintained and some details have been improved. In particular, the engine was completely overhauled at a specialist garage in Munich at a total cost of €14,671.
